Insulate

2nd March 2011 by

We’ve told you before, but we’ll tell you again.

Insulate with a friend. Insulate with a loved one. Insulate with a glass of wine. Then insulate some more.

We’re often told to reduce our electricity use. Sure. But space heating accounts for 60% of the energy we use in the house, with 20% on hot water and electricity only 20%. Reducing the heating demand for energy in the first place will do wonders. Pester you parents, landlords and friends on the housing ladder to insulate lofts, flat roofs, slanty roofs, floors, pipes, cavity walls, solid walls…

(If you’re interested in learning more you can read some or all of David McKay’s book Sustainability Without the Hot Air book for free online)

The Energy Saving Trust will be able to tell you about grants for insulation, draft proofing and other super-sexy energy saving measures that are available in your area so give them a call on 0800 512 052. They also have detailed guides on home improvements that you can download for free.

With loft insulation going at only £3 a roll, it’s more a matter of can you be bothered to pay a smaller heating bill than can you afford to insulate.

Pretty things corner

2nd March 2011 by

Is this giant clothes peg real? Does it matter? Twee is all I need sometimes.

In the spirit of twee I’ve been making baskets out of some pretty old welsh maps that my housemates found through freecycle (join up to your local group here) using these instructions.

I didn’t have a craft knife or mat and found that, contrary to the instructions, scissors were fine (all you need is: paper, scissors, ruler and some thread/string. Sorted). Good for bike bits. Good for giving as present. I find that the old wallpaper I got from a charity shop works well too.

When it comes to crafting, making, fixing, the internet is your (ethically caught) oyster! The incredible website instructables will tell you have to make just about anything yourself from food, to fashion, to furniture. Go forth with thy search engine and craft!

I felt inspired by the Otesha HQ’s car park garden so for my next act of twee I will be planting garlic bulbs in old colourful shoes that are beyond repair (plantable now and foolproof, apparently) to brighten up my concrete back yard.

In the carpark garden

24th February 2011 by

Last May when we moved offices everyone got very excited about the courtyard we face onto. The letting agents think it’s a carpark, but we maintain that it’s a courtyard. And everyone knows that a courtyard needs two things: bike racks and greenery.

Said letting agents did actually get some extra bike racks installed for the cycling behemoth that is Otesha. They have frowned a bit about the greenery, but we have persisted. So much so that even in February we’ve been eating carpark garden grown salad in our lunches.

Together with our officemates My Bnk and Foodcycle we’ve begged, borrowed and found-in-skips enough pots and planters to meet our growing needs. We filled them with compost from Spitalfields City Farm and from our very own wormcafe. We scattered some seeds, sat back at our desks and watched them grow. Over the summer we ate our own tomatoes, chives, chillies, mint, green beans, basil, rosemary, nasturtium, rocket and mizuna. The wormery takes care of all food waste and teabags (the teabags far outweigh the food waste, either we’re not very wasteful or we drink too much tea).

We haven’t yet decided what to plant this year. The mizuna just keeps on coming, the chives are just popping their heads up through the soil and we’ve got a coriander sprouting in preparation on the desk. There’s talk of trying potatoes and strawberries, one of the interns wants to make strawberry mash!

Big Ideas…

14th December 2010 by

My name’s Sam and I’m on an internship at the Otesha Project, which is all about training me up to be able to run my own project. So that’s what I’m going to do.

Firstly, of course, I had to think of a project. What do I want to change, what can I change? I’d always wanted to do something but I needed a big idea.

I thought about it for a while on the train home, staring into empty space with my headphones in. Surrounded by dozens of people doing roughly the same; twice a day, travelling from home to work and work to home. Then they get home, sit down and watch telly, maybe text someone or go on Facebook and finally sleep before repeating.

And people are becoming more and more isolated and introverted.

So I decided I wanted to get people talking again. Not just that, but being friendly to other people, maybe even being optimistic about ‘people they don’t know yet’ rather than ‘strangers’.

Essentially, the plan is to launch an open space in my local area (probably sometime around April-ish) with the aim of promoting a real sense of community and promoting the alternatives to what has created this antisocial society. I don’t really think the ‘Big Society’ is going to cut it.

This would, hopefully, provide everyone a place to sit and relax, away from home and with other people they share the city with.

In the fantasy world this open space exists in, the facilities available include an ‘open room’ of comfy chairs and tea and biscuits, a public meeting room for any group to utilise, also possibly a room with a few beds (read mattresses) to serve as a youth hostel and a community garden outside.

It’s very early days in an ambitious project but I’m optimistic. Feedback, ideas and volunteers would be much appreciated and hopefully you’ll be hearing soon about the grand launch.

Tremendous tetra-paks into wonderful wallets

1st October 2010 by

Last month our Fair Wares craft evening at DrinkShopDo was such a storming success that we’re doing it again on Thursday 7th October 7-9pm (and in November we’re going to make bike tyre belts).

Come along, bring your friends, make recycled tetra-pak wallets (it’s a good life skill), decorate them so no one knows they’re made out of rubbish, drink nice drinks, eat nice food and chat to nice people (us).

When: Thurs October 7 from 7:00-9:00pm
Where: Drink Shop & Do, No 9 Caledonian Road N1 9DX (right near King’s Cross station)
Cost: £5.00 including all materials
More info: http://www.drinkshopdo.com

Did we mention that it’s only a fiver? And that there are drinks? Also, the shop is lovely.

How to make a tetra pak wallet!

3rd September 2010 by

Last night was piles of fun, hosting Otesha’s first Fair Wears craft night at Drink, Shop & Do. So many people turned up! Jo was expecting to be able to finish knitting her sock, but no! We were rushed off our feet answering questions about juice cartons and it was fab. So, I bet you’re wondering how you turn a juice carton into a beautiful creation, like the one in the picture above? Well..

First you need some good instructors, like us Otesha laydeez (next Fair Wears wallet-making sesh will probs be Thursday October 7th).

Then, you need some clean tetra paks, with the top and bottom cut off. Fold in along the sides.

Then fold into three sections, like super speedy Laura here, get out the scissors and do some snipping to get it into shape. Good visual instructions can be found here (although instead of using staples, we just leave an extra flap that we can tuck in to hold the wallet together).

You can leave it there and look pretty cool and parade your beverage of choice when you whip out your wallet, or you can take it a step further and cover it with fabric and add a fastener. I got out the needle and thread and covered mine with a flowery scrap of fabric, added a retro button and some red string to fasten it all together.

Voila! It used to be a cranberry juice carton. How it has gone up in the world.
