They visited. Felin Uchaf, Bangor, Buckley, Manchester, Holmfirth, Leeds, Penrith, Cockermouth, Brampton, Newcastle, Alnwick and Edinburgh.

Meet the team

Peter Georgallou

Petor took part in the 2008 Wild West tour and joined the board of trustees in February 2009, after finishing a full term as a trustee he decided to take a more hands-on role in the charity. Having joined many tours in their training weeks providing a virtually Michelin star-worthy cooking service and running cycle maintenance workshops, he will be joining the 2011 Northern Soul tour as a liaison, after finishing a 2 month long internship organising the super hero tour.

Petor is currently working as an artist while studying the MA sculpture course at the RCA. He is also a builder of tall and exceptionally silly bikes, art director of a trans-gender opera company and full-time grower of organic free-range facial hair. Since his Otesha tour, Petor has ceased consumption of unethical meat products, and is living more sustainably in general and learning more all the time. Petor is a very silly man who enjoys wearing mismatched tweeds from car boot sales, dancing to gypsy music, producing zines, taking photographs using outdated equipment and writing in the third person.

Susanna Klassen

Hello from Canada! My name is Susanna and I am currently studying Land Surface Processes and Environmental Change at McGill University. I grew up in Saskatchewan (the Canadian prairies) but have been fortunate enough to explore some other areas of this massive country since I moved away from home 5 years ago. I attended an international school on the West coast of Canada for 2 years before spending my gap year working and backpacking in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. I love food, the outdoors, music, and community and try to spend as much of my time as possible enjoying these things. This past year I coordinated a farmers’ market at my university along with some other students, and I’m now working on starting a CSA program. Overall, my philosophy in life seems to be to do what you feel, and I find that’s working out fairly well for me. I am SO excited to spend my summer outside, with like-minded people, challenging myself (on multiple levels), and doing it all for a cause that I believe in.

Heni Lies

I’m Heni. I am taking a gap year after 2 years of music pedagogic studies in Oslo, Norway. I have just taken a 6-month stay in Malaysia working at the school and teaching music and arts.  From minus 30 in Norway to plus 30 degrees in Asia. From the North Pole to the equator. From climbing, kayaking and playing the cello to chilling on the beach with the ukulele. From knitting and rice pudding to chopsticks and rice soup. From skiing and bonfires to snorkelling and fried bananas. I’ve been cycling eastbound and westbound, taking a break in Germany, and I can’t wait to cycle northbound to the Lake District. I’m looking forward to meeting you all!

Erin Richan

Hiya! I’m Erin and I’m incredibly excited to be on board with this year’s Otesha UK Northern Souls tour. I’m 3 years into an Environmental Science degree and have just taken a global leap to the experience by studying for a term at the University of Stirling in Scotland. And so I have found myself in the UK for 6 months and can’t think of a groovier way to connect with a positive social movement than to join this mobile community commited to creative public engagement. Home is Guelph, Ontario, Canada.. but during the summer you would usually find me in the woods of British Columbia planting trees and picking cherries. I enjoy spending my freetime in whoever’s garden needs a hand, hula hooping, hiking and canoeing. I believe that life is too short to get down about the weather and that baking bread is an essential life skill. Looking forward to exchange ideas, draw inspiration, create, and have fun with you all. Peace!

Holly James

I just graduated from Kingston University in LIVE ART. After moving back to Sydney, Australia after three beautiful years in England I am returrning for the ultimate summer adventure! A Permaculture Design Certificate in Yorkshire, Vipassana – a 10 day silent mediation retreat in Herefordshire, and then six amazing weeks on the road with my fellow Oteshians. After ‘Northern Soul’ I will be heading back to sunny Sydney to do my Yoga Teacher Training and to spread Otesha love downunder. I can’t wait to meet everyone in the team and everyone on the road! x

Meghan Borato

Hi, I’m Meghan and I’m thrilled to be joining the Northern Soul Otesha crew! Being in the right place at the right time has afforded me a lot of amazing opportunities including landing me at Otesha UK’s website. I can’t think of a better way to spend the summer than bicycling the UK working with young people to impact change with Otesha’s unique blend of creativity and practicality. Besides cycling and sustainability my interests include travel, art, neighborhoods, podcasts, falsetto and kazoos and I work for Society for Photographic Education in the US. Looking forward to spending the summer abroad and on tour with Otesha as part of that experience.

Rachel Wake

Hello from Newcastle! My name is Rachel and I’m really excited (and terrified) to have got a last-minute place on the Northern Soul tour! I haven’t done that much cycling before but I’m trying my best to get prepared in time for the tour. I’m from Newcastle originally. From 2006 to 2009 I studied Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. I then spent a summer working on an organic vegetable box scheme, followed by WWOOFing, a 9 month stint as a full-time horticulture volunteer at a community garden in Devon, then more WWOOFing. As you can probably guess, I love gardening/growing and working outdoors generally. I also enjoy doing yoga. I’m passionate about living in a sustainable way and sharing this with other people and (hopefully!) spreading the sustainability message around the North!
